Cargo Metro

What is Social Art?

Posted in Cargo Metro by cargometro on January 5, 2009

I’ve decided to define Cargo Metro as a social art gallery. I’ve been sharing my ideal with several friends now. I noticed when I answered the question, “What is Cargo Metro?”, with a five word sentence, ”It’s a social art gallery,” seemed to satisfy the question immediately. Of course, I went into detail to explain how a social art gallery is different from other art galleries. As a graphic designer, mostly specializing in web design, I never considered myself as a designer. I view myself as a non-verbal communicator, simply because I focus on the message and the feeling that I want to communicate than the actual atheistic. My ultimate goal in any project is for the client’s face to light up when they see the final concept yet it achieves the business goals. I think it comes down to human behavior and I thrive to relate to it.

Therefore, in terms of Cargo Metro’s four areas of design, music, books and photography, it requires more direct communication than any other art form. Traditional art is up for interpretation. Photography is the exception because it doesn’t necessarily require a direct communication but it does capture human existence in the rawest form. It’s realistic with no fantasy-spin as an oil painting or sculpture could accommodate.

Art is social in general, however, Cargo Metro will provide the Short North community and Columbus, Ohio with a direct social experience from local artists that you cannot get from a traditional art gallery. Cargo Metro will require its customers to interact with the art. It will require personal interest. It will require yourself to have a direct conversation between you, your friends and your community.

I think all art is relative. photography on the outset seems very indirect but it ALWAYS requires a bit of a personal connection for it t o be so RAW and untamed.

photography is more social on its outset though, whereby its ability to generate communication between people verifies it as an art as well as a great catalyst for direct communication between people. :)

    CARGO METRO FOR LIFE!!!
